You wont find me feeding Whistle fruit or things like sweetcorn in a million years - however my toes, fingers, sleeves, necklaces and watch all seem to be very tempting!

They don't really understand the concept of a treat. Mine sometimes get the tops of strawberries that have been cut off. Maybe 2-3 'heads' between five of them, less than twice a year I'd say. I do it because it's handy for them to have a favourite 'naughty' food to medicate them if they ever become ill.

we have discovered Speedy Bob likes peas! He gets them very occasionally, as, if we hold them just out of reach when he goes to bite them, I can get a good look in his mouth to make sure its nice and pink and healthy! Other than that his treats are roses and pansies and generally flowers, as they dont grow as fast as the leaves on his weeds so he does not get them that often, but he loves em!

I think it did turn into a bit of a joke there, with the hot dogs, ice cream, lasagne and popcorn!

I don't always think its the food that causes problems but more a combination of several things together, for example Sid my male spur was 12 when he came to me and he grew up from a hatchling on all different kinds of cooked veg and fruit, Tootsie spent most of her previous life with lots of dogs and was fed very similar including dog food. However both torts were garden kept and Sid was hibernated when he wanted to and Tootsie under the stairs so both experienced much colder and warmer temps than are reccomended plus went from the end of september to April or more waking them selves, now to me Tootsie has a lovely shell and I wouldn't call Sid bad either. I think that being outside can counteract for the better a lot of bad things/conditions/food both my torts have always been outside and before comming to me neither had heat/light and were out in all weather with a simple hutch for shelter, they obviously foraged for themselves, had decent sized gardens but whatever it was it obviously worked in their cases. Just to add Sid was uk bred and Tootsie wc years ago (she's around 40yrs) Tootsie is the first photo.

I am soooooo confused when I started posting on here I was told no fruit what so ever as it wreaks havoc with thier stomachs yet peeps are feeding strawberries, tomatoes, and pineapple.

Not having a pop at anyone for what they feeding its just I remember I got blasted on here for feeding tomatoes and strawberries and was told weed and leafy diet only. I was shot down like I was committing cruelty to my torts. I could feel my head shrinking as the curse of being a fruit feeder was put upon me.

Am so confused right now at the conflicting stories.

If someone could pm me and give me a safe list of fruits to be given in moderation that would be great am just getting up to spped with me weeds and would like to feed a good variation but dont want to be massacred for being a bad mam to my torts.

I would not dream of giving my tortoises fruit or peas or any of most of the things others treat their tortoise. They are bad for them!!
My tortoises treats are hibiscus flowers, dandelion flowers. Always something healthy. I want my tortoises to outlive me.

No fruit in moderation is good for med tortoises. They all can and do do damage in the long term.
Stick to the healthy diet.
