A male Testudo hermanni boettgeri.... the person who had him originally should have his paperwork. If not contact DEFRA and ask their advice.

thank you.
i wasn't sure exactly what he was. now that you have confirmed this i will register him with our vet and i will cantact defra to see what we can do.
the previous owner bought him from our local reptile shop just before it was closed down last year. they were not given any paperwork with the tort. it was closed down because he had several animals that required dwa paperwork but had nothing. so i can believe that there has not been paperwork for him.
is there any way of best guessing his age?

It's pretty impossible to guess on age I'm afraid as torts all grow at different rates depending on how they've been kept/fed. He's certainly not an old tort though.

Hope he settles in well with you and give us a shout if you need any advice.

okay thanks. i wasn't sure about age size ratio.
he hasn't been kept well i'm afraid but he has settled well in his new house. i am not going to consider hibernation this year but next spring he will be going outside where he will spend his summer.
i just hope we manage to sort out his paperwork.
