Default up for a moan? good! look at this!

this is a photo taken of a tortoise farm in barcelona.

the pic was taken by a friend of mine.

the adults are all wild caught but do breed and the young are sold too.

the friend of mine did not buy anything. just want to see what you say about this pic....

i don't think there is anything particulaly nice about this farm personally and i strongly disagree with lining the owners pocket so he can nick from the wild again.

these are ethiopian leopard tortoises.

typical of captive farming really, although better then wild caught. captive breeding is the only way to go. but saying that you couldnt captive breed without getting animals from the wild in the first place. These sorts of farms are every where in the tropics, south america, africa, parts of europe.

how do you know they are all wild caught? and I don't think they are shipped over to here, or at least I've never heard of any from spain in the shops, so is there that much of a market in spain for them?. Is it a very big operation? how come your freind was allowed in there and able to take photo's?

the owner said the adults are all wild caught.

they are not shipped over to here. they get bought by the new owner and shipped by the new owner.

there is a market in the med for ethopian leopards but only three owners of them as far as i know in the uk.

its a small operation as far as i know.

the owner had no problem with visitors or cameras.

Nice ....I'm up for a good moan, but i cant think of anything to moan about in relation to that picture...i mean i know its very poor and they should be stoped and ashamed of themselves. But the issue with things like this is, i can sit here ranting til my fingers fall off, but he is still going to be earning from it >.<'

I didn't think that a tort would lay unless the conditions are right? if thats so then the picture can't be off a group of females, surely they wouldn't dig and lay in that pen. As far as I know the females can hang onto their eggs for years, wouldn't they do that if theres no where for them to lay?

they were probably mixed in there, i don't know enough about that farm to answer that i'm afraid. i have photos of the hatchlings taken on the same visit but i don't know where the eggs were laid or if they even were laid there.
