Default Tortoise dont bury herself at night

Hey guys, been reading through some of these threads and been really inspired, even changed some of my own table. Before i was only using hemp, then changed to a mix of hemp, topsoil, stones and timothy hay, but now its mostly top soil and stones in the corner.

Anyway to the matter at hand, even before i got the soil, using only hemp, my tortoise very rarely buried herself, i always assumed tht it was a natural thing to do to keep warm at night. Do they only bury themselves if they feel its too cold, night temps are usually between 14 - 20 at night, mostly sits round 16 unless i have window opened.

Just asking because i dont wanna poor soil over her head and shell at night incase she dies (Doubtful lol, but i wouldn want sum1 pooring soil over my head if i didn wanna bury myself).

Thanks for any Help

Some bury themselves completely, others just dig into the soil. Each tortoise is different.

Mine do different things on different days!

Sometimes they bury themselves, sometimes they go in the hide, sometimes they all pile on top of one another in the corner.

As long as you provide a temp and light gradient, they can choose where they want to be.

Hi

One of my torts (both Horsfields) digs herself down but the other does not and I have never seen him do so...he prefers to use his plant pot or under his slate.

Hope this helps..

Hi, I changed to all top soil (I used pet shop stuff and reptile bedding before) a few weeks ago and my tort will not dig in it! I dont know what it is but I was quiet worried as its getting cold and she'd just sit in the middle of her table uncovered. In the end I made a little corner and have used the pet bedding. I know its not recommended but she likes it and at least she digs under it when she is cold.
