I originally put that in and washed it but still couldnt get rid of the colouring in the water. Ive got reptile sand in there at the moment which seems to work well. The exo terra stuff is well expensive and for the size of the tank will cost me a bomb!

I don't know the quality of the play sand in the UK but I'm sure you can find silica sand which is used for sand blasting. That is much cleaner than regular play sand and is easier to rinse. It's still going to take a few days for the filter to get out all the particles and once the water is clear it is a good idea to clean out the filter.

If I use sand then I normally use playsand from Tesco, but I have also used the stuff sold for filling the gaps in block paving, I got mine from Wickes when I was doing the paving in front of my gate and had some left over.
