Hi,
I have "aquired" a Horsfield through the previous owner not wanting him any more!! I am not really used to him yet so I don't really know his character and mannerisms? I know he is three years old so still quite young. My question is, when is it time for him to hibernate??? I have noticed he is slowing down now...becoming a lot slower and less interested...not eating so much etc. How do I know when to pop him in a box and hibernate?? What's the process? Any advice greaty received. Kind regards, Martin

Hi Martin
Go to www.thetortoisehouse.com and www.tortoises.net for great instructions on how to hibernate tortoises

Try the tortoise trust site.
To wind a tortoise down. First week, full heat/light all week, NO FOOD, but bathe regularly. Second week, turn the heat/light on an hour later, off an hour earlier, NO FOOD, bathe. Third/fourth week continue reducing the daylight/heat gradually, until no heat or light. The last two weeks, they also need no ambient heat from room. By this time your tortoises stomach should be empty, and he will be slow enough to hibernate in a box or a fridge. Once in hibernation, your tortoise should be monitored regularly, for urination or runny nose. Or a big weight loss after the first two weeks, if any of these things happen, just get your tortoise up. No food fed during all this time, but bathing to keep hydrated.
