i'm sorry for your loss too. i have since got in touch with the vets and they have gave me there deepest apoligies (sp?) and have offered to help out with any vet charges i have with the second vets. i guess mistakes can be made and i'm coming to terms with that i just feel so angry this could happen. like you say we put our trust in them and sometimes its not worth it! |

I can't believe a 'specialist vet' couldn't pick up on that, and to be so sure of himself too.....
RIP Squishy.....

Sorry to hear this.
Unfortunately it's quite common for even specialist vets to have limited knowledge when it comes to turts, speaking to a few I think it's largely down to the fact that they don't get to see too many of them. If you think about it, the average turt "keeper" buys a little hatchling from a petshop for £10-20, has no real idea of how to look after it, is unable to recognise when it's sick, so more often than not it dies withough going anywhere near a veterinary surgery. Also vets are expensive, there are plenty of people who, when faced with a minimum £50 bill to treat a turt that cost less than half that, would simply consider it uneconomical, so again the turt isn't seen by a vet. Add to that the fact that turts are still relatively uncommon pets, and it's hardly surprising that very few vets become turt experts. Anyway at least you did what you could, it's hard to think what else you might have done that would have resulted in a better outcome, if it was septicemia it can be very hard if not impossible to treat, and it's not always easy to spot until it's too far advanced.

![]() Atm, I'm just applying my fish knowledge to observing my new YBS i.e. bright eyes, clear skin and carapace, no lumps or bumps, swimming, basking and eating normally - just generally the "look" of him really.

The "4 Inch Law" is not so much to do with weeding out unhealthy specimens, more a general attempt to control the trade, the theory being that people are less likely to impulse buy larger specimens. Also it was apparently not uncommon for kids to place tiny hatchlings in their mouths, resulting in several cases of Salmonella poisoning!
You can read an article on the subject here Editorial: The 4-inch Law
