Yippee! got my new vacum today, its a vax bright green, ok going back to giving my redfooted tortoise things that are high in protein, did i read pinky mice? Yuk... Havent heard about using chicken before, have read people giving theirs dog food but dont think thats a good idea, might try prawns.... Any other suggestions would be most welcome

Limestone flour, how safe is it, can tortoises eat too much of it?

It's pretty safe, it's non-toxic, and therefore you can't do any damage with occasional overdose.

The jury is still out on the long term effects of too much calcium. In theory, a healthy reptile should be able to regulate its own caclium intake, and get rid of any excess. There have been reports(in other species such as leopard geckos), of over calcification of organs on PM.

It's hard to get data on tortoises as they live for so long!

Personally, I dust most of my feeds with pure calcium powder. Limestone flour is just the calcium carbonate form of this!

I have a male leopard tortoise roughly 6yrs old he seems not to of grown very much in last couple of years, compared to my other ones, he eats well and seems healthy, i have them all wormed, he is kept in a 6ft vivarium, i was wondering if it could be down to me only having the 1 spectrum light in there, should i have 2?

So if i dust with the calcium as i already do, then do i really still need to use the limestone flour really? Questions questions....

What rating is it?

I use a 5.0 and a 1.0 in spring and autumn, and a 10.0 and a 1.0 in summer, as I feel this gives a more natural light.

Many people now use a combi bulb(I do for hatchlings) or just the one bulb. As long as it gives enough UV (preferably a 10.0) is close enough(18"max) and gets changed twice yearly, should be fine!

If you dust with a commercial calcium powder, there's no need to use limesone flour as well. They both do the same job.
