Seen an ad up with someone with no cities for there hermanns tortoises but they are a breeding pair, how do you manage to sell the babies on if the parents dont have a cities? Just a bit confused regarding cities would like to understand it a bit more.

the simple answer is you shouldn't, its against the law, but there are so many people that don't even know you need a certificate for certain species that I suppose they just buy them regardless and unless they someone tells them they'd never know. It makes real problems though for anyone who does find out and then tries to get a cert from Defra, to be honest I'd drop them an annonymous email they might not know, or if its a site you can post on then post your own message saying that Hermans require Article 10 papers. If you're considering buying them then get a letter stating why they don't have papers.

Yep, what Ann said

Also, be aware that loads of people advertise things as 'breeding pairs' when they think they simply have a male and a female! They reckon they can get more money for them that way. Seen it loads of times with turtles on local ad sites.

You cant sell without certs as it is illegale as has been said. But you can give them away no problems without a cert. Which is stupid but true, as if the second person wants to breed from them, they have to apply for paperwork. One of the things that is not so good about DEFRA laws.

I agree, would kinda be easier and make more sense if you simply had to own a cert to own an article 10 species. Instead of only if you intend to sell, or sell offspring.

Its illegal to sell the adults without paper work, they can give them away

You can breed tortoises without paper work, but means the off spring cannot be registered so cannot sell them, however you can rehome the babies

get them to admit they breed to sell without certs and dob em in!

it doesn't take much effort to sort paperwork out, if they've got the time and patience to breed, then they'll have the time and money to get it sorted!

Why exactly? So the government gets another 1lb of flesh?
While I don't condone the sale of tortoises without paperwork and all mine are registered I find the above rather strange. At least they would be UK C.B babies!

yeah, or 2lbs.

you're totally right but its my attitude .. i'm afraid i just can't see why people can't do it properly, i do agree that they'll all be ukcb though....

the sellers are setting themselves up for a pretty stingy slap on the legs though... if anything i bred needed paperwork then i'd make sure that i did it properly, its just the threat of defra coming round to take everything away..
