sorry to jump in on your post aaron, but question, would a bendy metal pipe unblocker work to clean the hoses, i always just flush em through with boiling water normally but they are starting to get nasty again and are due for a clean.

Ye that would be fine!

Ok we have a problem! I have dont it all the filter is full. Switched it on and nothing. It doesn't pump through! What have i dont done right?

I dont really know, i played with the impeller then shuck it them BOOM everything worked. But there is a really annoying rattling. Ill that be something with the impeller?

Unless you've taken the impeller out for some reason before hand, I doubt it.

As Graham says, sounds like an air lock. Both my exturnals get air locks from time to time, a gentle shake, a hiss and a gurgle later, the air comes out, and the filters go back to being quiet.

Rattling is usually caused by air bubbles in the impeller chamber, turning it upside down usually clears this.
