Indeed they're not hermaphrodites

I've got 11 in a few different colours, of which 5 are of breeding size - I'd have thought I'd have no problem getting them to pop out some eggies

Hmm the wall is fully submerged but I can always add a few river rocks for easy access over the wall.

I have a hatchling false map and a red claw crab togther, until the little turt gets big enough to go in the big tank with the others, and they get on great.

The crab, the turtle and the polypterus fish all sit under the spot lamp (crab on highest ground, turt lower, and fish under water)

they get on great even share food if i put some blood worm in

Sorry, but musk eat crustaceans in the wild... the crabs will end up as lunch sooner or later.

Yeah I know but in captivity you do find they act quite different.

My musks don't bother my apple snails :S Though the snails are large, so they will probably eat the young, which I am hoping they do!
If not...Assasin snail!

I'm sure my musks would be fine with crabs. The crabs only live a few years anyway so they'l be dead by the time my little musks get a decent size advantage over them.

Hmmm I've been reading and some people say red crabs MUST live in brackish (salty) water and some say they will be fine in fresh water.

Surely my turtles and fish wouldn't be okay in brackish water though? =/

Common musks live in freshwater therefore no salt should be added.

Surely you wouldn't buy a creature knowing it had got a relatively short life span and then state it'll die anyway before your turtles were big enough to attempt to eat it!

Red Crabs ARE a brackish water species, whilst many have them in freshwater, they are merely surviving, not thriving.Personally i wouldnt mix crustaceans with turtles anyway.

i personally wouldnt put crabs or snails (and fish) in with turtles unless you expect them to be food. although some turtles go along fine aside them without a problem others will demolish them. its pot luck i have found it all depends on the turtles personality. i have got a couple of turtles in my community tank without a problem but i wouldnt dare put the others in as i know they would demolish everything in sight! its your choice at the end of the day. although it sounds cruel i guess its just a case of trial and error.
