I tend to leave mine for about an hour after the lights go on, then if they haven't got themselves up, I get them up for bath and food. More often than not, they're both awake by then and stomping about, although sometimes I have to get one out of his readi grass bed

she now has a section of soil/sand about 5 inches deep and the rest is chip she seems a lot happier this could either be because of the change in substrate or she just feels more settled i wish i didnt worry sooooooo much !!!!

thanks for all the advice now i can sit back relax and enjy her ps my fridge has been turned into a torte fridge full of different weeds and lettuces lol xx

I know, can't believe that I was considering having Thomas rehomed earlier in the year when he was poorly and I had to go away to work for 4 months - thank god Tamz came to the rescue and I still have my little man - would have to find something more productive to do than just sit there and watch him!

Aww, I'm really glad you were able to keep him. Bless Tamz, she's lovely.

It is productive watching them, it's an education

I dont think my tort is really trying to hibernate but he does sleep all the time. I wake him to bath him at night and he will stay under his lamp for about 10mins after his bath and then head right back to bed. I use hay for his bed is this ok? he will sometimes sleep under his hide. He rarely comes out for a walk around unless I wake hime and take him out of his bed. Is he just a lazy tort, is this normal, he has no runny bits so I don't think he is ill. He's 3 years old, a hermans and never hibernated before.

Do you know for sure he has never hibernated?

I would really try and bathe and feed in the morning, if at all possible.

I'd say to take the hay out lovey as it can scratch their eyes and also it holds on to any moisture or wee and can get mouldy spores on it. Try just using soil so he can dig about in it to get comfy for going to sleep. Its probably the temperature thats effecting him - it's natural for him to want to hibernate and as the temps are cooling he's doing what comes naturally - keep bathing him, feeding him and keep the temps up if you arent hibernating him this year

Try bathing in the mornings rather than at night, tortoises sense its evening and are normally ready to go to sleep.
Bathing in the morning will also increase the appetite.
