i would say a vet visit (a specialist that knows what they are doing when it comes to torts) to be on the safe side.

Blood in urine can be caused by things like infections, internal injury to the urinary system or inflammation. I think kidney stones can cause it too. This is in people by the way, I'm assuming the causes in animals can be similar.

Definitely a vet visit. Try not to panic too much though, it takes very little blood to be visible in wee, and sometimes the causes, while needing attention, are not life threateningly serious.

Was it definitaly blood - Dandelions can turn wee to a pinky colour?

Ring the vet - no animal/human has blood in their urine for no reason - get an appointment and get the little guy sorted out.

Let us know how things go wont you please?

I was wondering whether any red food such as peppers or tomatoes might have that effect as well

As the others have said, pink colour urine can be too many dandies. But if you are new to tortoise keeping, then a visit to the vets (tortoise vet) is the way to go. To give you peace of mind and the tortoise checked out.
