mine had a bit of a runny nose like yours only on a morning, fine the rest of the time, the breeder that sold him to me said it could be a bit of powder he had sniffed up and was trying to get rid of it! still
took him to vets and he was a rep vet give him antibiotics but did say it could take a few weeks to clear up. turned the temp up on a night but left it at 30/32 during the day. |

There seem to be several a/bs that ae used for RNS - years ago Baytril was the broad spectrum drug of choice but because many tortoises became resistant to it they do use others now.
I have heard there is a retired vet that lives in Winchester who has started to develop herbal remedies for tortosies if I can find out any more I will let you know.

Nebulisers can be useful when it comes to RNS. I have used one a couple of times in the past and it did help clear the RNS. Using diluted F10.

I just thought I would update this as so many of you made the effort to help me with pickle's snot problem!!
I bought a red night bulb and keep the temperature at night at around 25 degrees. The snot cleared up instantly, I haven't seen any for a few weeks now. Do you think the increased night temps really made all the difference, or could it be coincidence? If the warmer temps did cure him, what was the problem in the first place?? Surely it would take more than that to cure a viral/ bacterial infection? Do Torts get a runny nose when they are cold? I do but it doesn't mean I'm ill!!! Now I'm too scared to turn it off!!! Should I try and reduce the temp at night in an effort to "harden him off" before he goes out in the garden for the summer? There won't be too many nights in our good old British summer of 25 degrees! Cheers!!! Oh, by the way, I have just read on the Tortoise trust website that red night bulbs are not suitable for tortoises. Sigh. Why is this and what expensive item should I go and buy instead! |
