I keep Map turtles they stay fairly small but with all turtles your still going to need a large enclosure, small turtles doesn't necessarily mean small enclosure

musks stay relatively small, but then it all depends what size you of space you have available as a maximum

Musks are the smallest I know of that are readily available. Female maps can get pretty big, but males stay small, so if you wanted a map, you could look for an older rehomer that's confirmed male. You can't sex turtles when they're really small, so you can never tell what you're getting when you buy a baby

The easiest to get hold of is the common musk turtle (Sternotherus Oderatus) and also the razorback musk turtle (Sternotherus Carinatus). The common musk gets to approx 4.5 inches, the RB musk, upto 6 inches

Here is an adult female Razorback musk:

Less common, but also small as adults are eastern & mississippi muds (kinosternon subrubrum) and 3 striped mud turtles (Kinosternon Baurii) which are similar in size as common musks.

Then there is the lovely spotted turtles (Clemmys Guttata), which get to around 5 inches, but can be expensive to buy.

African helmeted turtles (pelomedusa subrufa) can get to around 8/9 inches fully grown and are fairly easy to get hold of:-

Maps: Unless you can get an accurately sexed older male map, then you could end up with a large female. Here's one of mine:

Compared to an adult male:

Jo, that female RB has a beautiful shell. And such a cheeky face! Great comparison pics for the female/male maps too. And of course I can never get enough of an AHT's smile

I'd like to go in with the spotteds. I've never seen them with my own eyes, so that would be nice. Although I'm quite a strong swimmer, so I'd probably appreciate more water
