I have recently bought a large “lucky Reptile” fogger for my red footed tortoise enclosure. Can anybody tell me the physics involved in it as I can see it is not a steamer. Also is it safe as I have to admit I feel a bit ill if I inhale it.! Tortoises obviously can’t climb trees and vines ect like lizards and snakes(to avoid it ) so I am a bit nervous about using it.
If anybody has used it for torts with no ill effects I would be very grateful if you could post Woody I have posted this on General Herp chat aswell |

I don't keep redfoots myself but I am led to understand that ground humidity is more important than air humidity. Spraying the substrate a few times a day seems an adequate way of providing this.....but again, a redfoot owner may be able to help more.
Sorry I can't give a definative answer

Hi Woody,
I don't have red foots but i did look on the Tortoise Trust site to see if their was anything that could help you, i did fined this article not on fooggers but the diffrent types of misters to use and what type of humidity they produce; TROPICAL RAINFOREST TORTOISES AND TURTLES: Practical techniques for the provision of adequate ambient humidity in captivity A this sight on Red foot care; Basil the Redfoot Tortoise I to say in all the stuff i have read on tortoise, i don't remember anyone using a fogger! ![]() Sorry i can't be much more help, except if you fined the fog a bit choking, then think of the torts and their smaller lungs, maybe just spray the substrate like Phoebe has already said in the above thread! until you can be sure what you are using is safe ![]() |

iirc they use ultrasonics to vapourise the water, cant see it being harmful but im not knowledgeable on torts etc.

Hiya there is no need for a mister at all. I have 7 red foots, all you need is damp substrate, i use top soil and a layer of children play bark kept at 90% humidity.
