check list for buying a healthy Tortoise

hi, having bought a little idian star i thought nothing of it when the guy selling her to me said she had a cold and to keep her under heat for a few days, being a novice i didnt know any better, did that then researched her symptoms, took her to several vets and low and behold she has herpies!!! any advice on what i should do??? this was from a well know pet shop too. grrrrr

If I were you I'd talk to the pet shop concerned and let them know... especially if they have other torts in the shop.

I hope she gets better and for some specific advice on her care I'd suggest you post a thread in shelled asking for help.

My daughter has moved to dubai and found a pancake tortoise abandoned in the flat, it is very small with blackness round its mouth. There is no pen or form of heating for it, what do you think?

even if it is in a viv doesn't mean that it is unhealthy, different breeds need different conditions. As long as all the other signs are good then the enclosure used makes no difference as long as it is well maintained at the right levels.

Posts are not deleted that may go 'against the beliefs of the majority'. The forum is here for everyone to post their opinions and yours are just as valid as anyone elses. You are quite right when you say that a viv is not necessarily a bad environment as a viv can act well as a home as long as it is well ventilated to avoid high humidity if needed (for example horsfields, as you have, are susceptible to rns if kept in an environment which is too humid), the correct temp gradients can be achieved and the particular tort being kept isn't one who is stessed by a see through barrier (some are, some aren't). This can be very difficult to achieve in a 'bog standard' viv, for some species, which I think is what the OP was referring to.
