I feel your pain. Got a JCP baby yesturday and it wants me dead. Was expecting it to be nippy, but this little girl is satan. It even shat on me for good measure incase it wasnt making its point across with the striking.

Going to let it settle in for a week, get it started on food... then planning some regular handling sessions. Would rather get the blood and tears out the way now then try and tame her down when she is a adult.

Bloody things have a hell of a reach on them for something so little!

as above let them settle in then get them eating. Once they have had two or three feeds they will be settled.

The aim is to get the snake out, handle it for a couple of minutes and put it back without getting bitten. Make all movements really slow. Handle it alone so there are no sudden movements. Wear a thin leather glove if it helps, but a glove inevitably make it difficult to feel the snake. I usually wear a glove to get the snake out then discard it once in hand. Don't stop the snake from moving just slow it down, and don't hold it near the head or neck. If you get bitten handle the snake a little longer, don't put it straight back. The trick is to be confident with handling, The more confident you are the less likely you are to be bitten.

It took about 6 weeks for mine to not bite me every time I handled her and about 3 months to be fairly trustworthy.

I honestly think carpets are a bit nippy when young as they have a massive appetite. I have taken one in lately that was pure satan until I gave it a few HUGE meals. My IJ is soppy as, but he is well fed, never hissed/struck once.

handling them regularly is key as said above but befo use gloves
so you stay calm. i do this while watching a movie so they settle down. after a few session you can take the gloves off! but don't give up them.
good luck todd

My baby jungle is a demon! He bites me all the time but only twice has he ever broken the skin so it's not that bad really. But he has a crap appetite. I've been having to assist feed recently as he lost a lot of weight. He's getting back up though (much to his displeasure!) But gentle calm handling they soon tame down.

What I do is get a tub and when your cleaning out your vivs use the tub to put the snake in and when the viv is clean take the lid off the tub and let the snake come out and explore your hands and arms and be still no sudden movements and I have used this method with 2 of mine and they are now easily held but my big female Jungle will give me the odd strike but I let her come out of the tub and then pick her up and she has not bitten me yet despite all the strikes and odd bit of hissing. I used this for my one of my other Carpets too and its easliy held and has not shown any sign of aggression since I started doing handling/cleaning like this and I have only been bitten once by it the night I got it so I must be doing something right.

I'm just about to take receipt of a jungle jag 09 hatchling; I don't mind being gnawed on so the taming process should be fairly entertaining.
