They'll still be small, around 12"-ish

Agreed. I tend to keep mine a few months and only sell them when they feed well. Some people are not so scrupulous though. I'd only buy if it's had at least 3 consecutive feeds and shed at least once. Babies start at 10-12 inches and will only get a few inches longer in the first few months.
