I have a quick question about positioning of the thermometer probe.

My probe has a sucker on the end. At the warm end of the viv should it be stuck to the side glass (probe measuring air temp), burried in the aspen, or stuck to the bottom of the tank with aspen on top.

Currently its stuck to the bottom of the tank burried in aspen (above the heat matt which I tape to the underside of the tank). The temperatures are reading a little high, but I want to check if the thermometer probe is in the correct place.

This is where I have my probe stuck

You can also stick it directly to the heat mat

The temperature was reading as high as 38*C. I've turned off the heat pad and the temp is now coming down.

Hermie's previous keeper had the heat matt in the vivarium turned on all the time and he didn't use a thermometer as far as I know. The snake shows no signs of being burnt though.

Is a thermostat needed?

Yes a thermostat is 100% needed, as heat mats can severly overheat with nothing regulating them, causing possible harm to your snakey.

You can pick up a basic mat stat (which will be fine) for about £20
