He was lost but now is found
My daughter left our viv ever so slightly open after handling Cyrus, my yr old corn. He is kept in her loft conversion room and I didnt realise he was missing for 24 hrs. I had the whole damn house upside down for days checking in absolutely every place I could. There was a hole leading into the tiny loft where an old pipe had been from her bigger radiator. It hadnt been filled as I was due to decorate. I had everything out of the loft and still nothing. I set up an old viv with his substrate in it to hopefully lure him back with its scent. I left a heatmat on and kept replacing pinks every day. Still nothing. All places were checked, I would wander my house and loft every night with a head torch on at strange darkened hours lol. I made loads of those bottle traps and left them all around the house. Flour ar doorways, low tack sticky traps the lot, all in vain. I notified local vets and RSPCA (National and local) who put him on their database.
6 wks later my neighbour asked if I kept a snake......I hadnt mentioned it to any of them as I was sure Cyrus was long gone and was worried about their reaction. I know, not overly responsible. Apparently 6 doors down (I live in a terrace) a lady was cleaning out her sons room and was under his bed dragging out toys etc and just grabbed Cyrus, thinking he was a toy snake, he hissed at her!!! She called RSPCA who initially didnt want to come out. They did eventually and hadnt checked their database or they would have suspected he was mine, given my notification of his loss. They said they would take him and rehome him. My neighbours daughter offered to take him as she wondered if he was mine. We were away on holiday at the time. The RSPCA lady told her to feed him some crickets??!!! and keep him in a pillowslip if she couldnt afford a viv!!
Luckily I got my boy back. He had apparently guzzled water but she sensibly did not give him crix as she read he could survice OK without foor for a long time.
Funny thing is within one week her boyfriend and her became proud owners of a corn hatchling from the breeder of mine. She got the bug overnight and is well versed in how to catch a snake after I had gone into all that I had been trying!!
