Question Venomous Snakes

There have prob been a ton of posts like this but iv been doin a little research on keepin venomous snakes, and im thinkin of applyin for a DWA. I was wondering if thers anyone on here thats got experience with venomous snakes and what people suggest would be the best to start with... Iv being looking at Mangrove Snakes, but iv heard there aparently comin off DWA :S

Any help would be appreciated.

Obv small snakes i dont want to mess about with as ther too fiddley and hard to locate in the viv. Larger more restraint friendly would be better

Thanks... SI

Mangroves are already off the DWA list. But still have a horrid bite! Nice looking snake tho. Why don't you look in the DWA forum!

Ok, I have no experience with venomous snakes, I'm just going by what I've read/heard/watched on youtube...
I think gaboon vipers are supposedly docile and they are a heavy bodied slow moving snake. They are, however, one of the most venomous snakes in the world and their venom is... can't remember the word, but it eats away at tissue causing the most painfull bite of all snakes. People have lost their arm after a bite!

people suggest copperheads as a good first hot, I dont have much experience with them but they can be quick to bite and still would do you damage, is there really a good first hot? I know of people that started with cobras, my first hot was my vipera ammodytes and I couldnt wish for a nicer tempered little chap, really laid back and freindly, your best bet is finding someone in your area that can mentor you.

its not really how potent the venom is, because although its bad its no where near the most potent, its the sheer amount they inject they are massive snakes with huge fangs and venom glands, people have died from bites dispite immediate hospital treatment, I read about one guy who got bit and despite anti venom and treatment he died after 10 hours.

surely if mangrove snakes have come of the dwa they would be a good snake to get as a "starter snake" to practice with and such ?

it mostly depends on what you want to keep, if Cobras are your passion, why not start of with a False Water Cobra, these are rear fanged, but if you like Aboreal species, go for Boigas....Like Mangs and Brown Trees

A FWC is not a real Cobra...

Iv looked at gaboons as there one of my favourite snakes lol... and do you have to pay public liability insurance along with the DWA licence fee's? iv found a guy locally that has a Mangrove not sure if he's a tad dodgy tho :S... does anyone know a reputable DWA supplier nationally?? or should i just enquire at my local herp retailer?

Thanks ... SI
