Smile New Herper!

Hi. As a teenager I had quite an interest in snakes but the parental units always prohibited me having one. I also wanted a dog and that was prevented too. I finally got my dog, a white shepherd, in my late 20s and Ben was a faithful companion for over 12 years. Alas he suddenly died 18 months ago and after a while pet less I started looking for a new companion. I've currently not got the time needed for a dog so I was looking for something a little more maintenance free.

Around the same time I went to stay with friends who are herpers and have a lovely collection of snakes. This renewed my interest so after researching breeds, working out that Corns are one of the best 'starter' snake, I bought a baby anery who've I've called Ariadne (despite not knowing what sex it actually is).

Ariadne seems to be thriving. She's gone from one pinky a week to two and I recently sourced some large pinkies (not quite fuzzies) for the future. Her first shed with me was totally uneventful. I wasn't aware she was shedding but she was hiding and I just left her be for a couple of days. I came back from the gym one day to see the end of her shed sticking out of the hide. It looks like a good clean shed. She seems happy to be held and inquisitive when out.

She scared me the first night when she got out between the glass of her viv. I'd left the rest of the substrate in a bag on top of the viv and I found her in that. I now have a piece of cardboard packing between the panes which will stay until I'm sure she can't get through.

But I'm hooked. She's in a quite a small viv, (2' x 15" x 15"), so I'll get her a bigger one when she's about a year old. This means I'll have a spare viv which can take another snake *grin*. I've also been looking at something may be a little bigger for the future, a rosy boa or possibly a carpet python. My housemates are already referring to me as the mad snake lady...

LOL I can vouch for that, I've taken on a rescue BRB and am already planning what I can put in her viv once she's in her new big shiny house - I'm either thinking another BRB or a royal.

Herping seems to be like pringles - once you pop, you can't stop!!

Popping is something I've not been brave enough to do hence the reason why I don't know Ariadne's sex!
