Depends what type of heater you're using.

With heat mats the probe (sensor) should be positioned directly on the mats surface, or as close to it as physically possible. The closer the probe is to the mat, the more stable the temp of the mat will be.

With lamps/bulbs/ceramics - matter of opinion really. I have mine directly under the bulb, entering the viv through the side or back wall about 3 or 4 inches from the floor so that the snake can't lay on it and shield it from the ceramic (which would cause temps to rise).

Some people have the probe in the middle of the viv for bulbs/ceramics. But I find it easier to get the gradient, especially in warm weather, with the probe closer to the heat source.

We have ours taped to the wall level with the surface of the substrate, cos that's where the snakes lie to bask, but Mark's comments make sense too. Trial and error

i place mine directly on the heat mat and secure it with foil tape. i secure it really really well, i would hate for it to slip. foil tape is perfect for securing it in place.

Oh yeah, that method was for lamps, forgot that bit! Again mats havre the probes directly on the surface (we use a mixture of the two, it's just easier that way.)

i always use ceramic with pulse stats, i usually put the sensor abit up from the reptiles main habitat(eg where it spends most of its time)in the middle of the temp range and always put thermometers at both ends of the viv along with a good range of hides, get the temperature roughly right and then tweak it depending on the animals movements till it looks happy

hopefully i made some sense
