Pet shop license

It now looks as though as a result of a "friend of a friend" reporting concerns about me selling snakes on here that I am going to have to get a Petshop License to be able to continue doing so.

Apparently it has nothing to do with making a profit it is dependent on the numbers involved and the welfare of the snakes.

The lady from Animal Health at my local council has gone away to find out more and is to ring me back so I will update when I hear from her..

It is all about profit and running a "business", at least - trying to make a profit. This is the law. Do not let them bully you into something that does not apply to you.

What county council area are you in?

The keeping and running of a pet shop is controlled by the Pet Animals Act 1951. If you own a shop that sells pets (livestock) you must get a licence from the council.

To prove that you need a license any council would have to prove that you are running a business. Simply keep repeating that your animals are pets, anything that is bred, is bred as a private hobbyist, any animals that are sold are done so privately in order to cover the costs of raising them.

It's City of York council and she reckons profit has nothing to do with it just the numbers I'm selling (I told her around 30 this year)

There are breeders who sell many hundreds of snakes a year with no need for a pet shop license, because they have bred their own, and are classed as private hobbyists. She is misinformed, insist that she checks with DEFRA who oversee the Pet Animals Act 1951 and she will be given the correct information.

I don't know who it is. It could be my next door neighbour whose a trouble maker or it could be someone on here.
