Default Vivs Supporting Weight

Debating if I can stack an aquarium on top of a viv safely.

Weight of the water will be about 440 Ibs.

Viv would be a 4x2x2 15mm melamine.

What ya think?

No really! if you get any lateral movement the bottom viv could (probably will!) collapse rather disasterously...

Remember 1msq (one square meter of water) weighs a metric ton...

the 15mm chipboard would handle the compressive load the joints wont

No way at all!!!!!!! You'd need to construct some kinda framework around the viv which'll be sturdy enough to hold the tank.

This plan has been running through my head... best mate could weld me up a nice steel support maybe. That's look pretty kick ass... viv topped with a nice aquarium

Gd idea if you make a studwork frame in say 2x2 or 3x2 but cross brace it (ie stop it collapsing latrally) then you woudld be fne th id consult a carpenter on how to construct it round your viv tomake it both practicaland astheticly pleasing

Old man is a carpenter

It was more a hair-brain Idea I just came up with whilst scanning the room for potential space (as we all do).... started eyeing up the spot above my CCPs viv. lol

If i were you i'd look for an industrial shelving unit that would fit in the space then adapt the bottom into the viv you want.
The reason i say this is that they will tell you what weight they can hold quite precisely.

Cant you do it other way around, and construct some kind of frame work where the viv can be ontop of the aquarium. Just a thought, but not sure if even that would work. Depends if your good at diy!!
