And all those herpetologists from 20 years ago mustn't have a brain.. a stupid comment. We can point out the usefulness, nay, the compulsory nature of having a stat.. but calling people stupid (and I take it you mean the likes of me who has kept reptiles for over 20 years), and to suggest the care of the animal is neglected.. well I might suggest you re evaluate your obviously well respected and researched opinion...

Stats are a great tool in the arsenal.. they are not the be all and end all for someone who works with their animals all the time, and checks on temps reguarly (which I appreciate most don't)

Not that they didn't have a brain - they didn't have the tools in the first place. Not having the tools and thus not using them isn't stupidity. HAVING the tools (or affordable access to them) but not using them IS.

Cars have only recently had air bags. Should we remove all car air bags because they're a pointless safety measure that sometimes goes wrong.... or should we continue using them and educate about the correct usage of them because they save lives more often than not especially if they're being used correctly?

Everyone's got to sleep sometime, and that's several hours when you cannot be maintaining temperatures if there is a heat spike.

I cant believe this conversation/thought process continues to exist - If people consider themselves herpetologists then surely a very large part of the art of keeping herps is the provision of an appropriate environment, with proper temp gradients etc and of course safety.

None of these factors can be achieved without proper heat control and that is what a thermostat provides (alongside other factors). Luck shouldnt come into it

So do I need a thermostat - no I dont but my reptiles do.

having a thermostat is not going to make you a herpertologist.a degree in zoology might.

I never said it would - I was referring to a previous post talking about herpetologists not using stats in the past.

I recently moved one of my bigger snakes from her rub on the heat strip to her own viv, and went to get her a stat for it.
I went to one shop who told me that "Under no circumstances would they recommend that you use them therefore they do not stock them"
I honestly cannot understand that. It is one thing to say you won't need it but to be telling people that they are not recommended under any circumstances!!! And this is a shop that stocks reptiles - god knows what they are doing to those animals.
Had I been a newbie keeper that could have stopped me even looking for a stat!
I find it unreal the sort of information that pet shops can get away with handing out. I would respect someone in a petshop a whole load more if they said, sorry, I'm not sure, than waffle on a load of old nonsense.
