good post if this was a sticky then it might stop all the arguments when newbies ask this question and you get the like this thread say you need one which i fully agree as i broke a exoterra stat without a snake in the viv when getting it set up and the small minority who say you dont need one i never have whats the point it would also lower the amout of rep being taken to the vets with burn and possible death

Well done, as others, I have done this myself, but people don't listen, at least you have the photos.

Its a pretty big 46w one i`d normally use for heating 2-3 50l tubs, but wattage is only dependant on the size of the mat. Even the smallest mats are capable of these temperatures. Only a small portion of this mat was covered with the tub and more of it exposed to the open air. If anything i imagine a smaller mat completely covered with no air exposure therefore more insulation would actually get hotter than this one.

I agree this should be a sticky.
Get so Pee'd off with people saying that you dont need a thermostat with a heat pad (partulary when newbies buy a starter kit from a shop).

Just to put it into perspective, the thermometer on the surface of the mat maxed at 158F, which is 70C, it probably got hotter but i don`t have a thermometer handy that`ll go that high.
You can cook an egg at 63C.

Like you say, its the shops that are to blame, not many 'complete' starter kits come with stats.
