well the next set of pics
  and somebody telling us that their thermometer registered x is even less reliable. plus to me it looks more like an infra red, i could be wrong but i'm not sure how you can heat one up.

I'll take video of doing spot readings - point, click, where the thermometer readout is always visible in the video screen. Heat mat, refrigerator, my hand, that sort of thing.
You obviously don't understand how an infrared thermometer works - it can't be "heated up beforehand" because it takes an INSTANT reading of what it's pointed at.

Guys the actual wording in the Habistat manual (which you haven't addressed) is far more supportive of my argument than yours. And who should people listen to? A reptile appliance specialist company, or some stubborn veterans on a forum?
