What, you mean this Habistat heat mat manual which says substrate must be kept to less than 1 centimetre due to the risk of thermal blocking and

Last I checked, most snakes do in fact have particular requirements for temperatures less than 100-110-120-130-145 degrees fahrenheit, and a small enclosed space like a vivarium or worse yet a faunarium is definitely an environment prone to overheating.

Oh yes, definately. The heatmat and basking bulb wake up one morning and say 'We're gonna be twice as hot as we were yesterday!', don't they?

No ones said it yet but Morgoth....Your a tool!!!

Yea many years ago you may have kept reps on heat mats and not thought any thing about it.
But times change, things change and advances are made!! You dont think the creators of Habistat and Microclimate also A reptile appliance specialist company made them for a laugh and just to look good do you....NO!!! They made them as advances were made and the need and use of these was very important!
Ok so your arguement is that you heat mats arent too hot, ok that very may well be, but what stops them from being faulty over heating and cooking your reptiles while your out????? SIMPLE IT DOESNT!!!! Dont be cheep and buy some mat state (WHICH MAY I ADD ARE THE CHEAPEST OF ALL THE STATS ANY WAY!) Protect your reps, your house and yourself!!!! Every peice of heating equipment i have is on a stat, always has and alwys will be! I have never had any faulty and may never get a faulty peice of equipment in which case i will be lucky but i dont want to take that risj for the sake of £10-£20 on a stat!

ive been keeping out of this today as im in an arse of a mood anyway but..just had my poxy 6" x 11" 7 w arcadia matt running for the last 2 hrs without a stat and it managed to climb to 39.9 celsius or 103.8 ish old school...agreed thats straight to the mat but lets be honest a cm of substrate and a couple of layers of miracle paper aint always gonna stop a reptile from pushing it away and exposing the mat..

Price has zilch to do with it, if I did I doubt I would be spending £2500 on a pair of GTPs, Zebra plecos and set-ups etc.

If it ain't broke don't fix it. The only problem I've ever had with heat mats over time is that they lose effectiveness until in the end they don't give out any heat at all.
I've heard of people who have a stat on every bit of equipment and I am split in two about it. Firstly I think, well its good they are clearly well into the hobby, secondly I think, bit of a waste though, as the maximum that appliance can get to is below what the reptile requires anyway.

Aye, I agree. The 60watt bulb has an identity crisis and thinks its 150watt.

By the way, a power surge would just short the electric and blow the bulb, not make it run a 200% its maximum power lol.

My own experiment on a 60watt 4foot heatmat says otherwise (86.5 under 3 sheets of paper). What else am I meant to go on but plain figures I acquire myself?

Mate i own single boas worth more than that! And used to be a big keeper of gtps and ebs ask any one on this forum. And if your keeping gtps then you will not be using a heat mat you will bu using spot bulbs or cermaics which HAVE to be on a dimmer or pulse stat simple as!
If you dont agree with stats do you agree and use bulb guards???????
