A ceramic wouldnt instantly blow, it would heat, then over heat and then blow. The over heating could be enought to damage or kill your snake!!

Morgoth, it's an extra security prevention. Just because the mat does not kill your snake, it does not mean that it is living in optimal conditions.

Wow. Just spotted this thread, but don't have enough time to stay for long.

Morgoth, I spotted where you said that the manufacturers of these mats are the ones that you will listen to as they make them, so know whats best and safest for the reptile. Fair enough, well just for you here are Microclimate instructions, so please click on link below. Please also note where they state to use a thermostat.

Thanks,

Maureen.

1. I use bulb guards with snakes, of course, because, unlike a heat mat, a bulb provides a very high direct heat.

2. Thats what fuses are for. If there is a power surge the fuse is designed to blow so you don't get an out of control appliance and burn your house down.

3. Yes, its an extra security prevention and its useful to have - nowhere have I said don't get them, I've said they aren't absolutely essential

Jake - it doesn't matter if you have an albino Royal python costing a bomb, the point I am trying to make is I'm not after saving every penny I get.

Microclimate Heat Mats

I've also bought Microclimate heatmats, and one thing I didn't like about them, apart from a rediculously short lead, was the manual saying a thermostat is essential for something as weak as a heat mat.

even the Habistat manual says to use them if you read it properly.

now not using one would depend on the scenario, possibly on the back wall rather than under the tank and seeing as all snakes / lizards have particular requirements - ie a maximum temperature - then it pretty much says a stat is advisable.

I would say they are fairly essential to the keeping, health and safety of any Green Tree Python as no heat equpiment it designed to create the perfect optimum temp for any chondro too thrive there for a stat is required to control and create this optimum temp.
