Can you try plugging the lamp into the stat instead, and see if it gives you a surface temperature that's the same? It may be a calibration issue on the stat - or it could indeed be a faulty mat stat.

It'll turn the bulb on and off, but it should regulate the temperature. I'd put the probe just underneath the bulb, but make sure the heat mat is turned off so you're just measuring ONE piece of heating equipment's temperatures, not both of them.

took stat back today as thought it was faulty , fella in pet shop said not to put sensor on the mat but to just poke it through back of viv , so i told him your supposed to put in in center of mat and he said were does it state that , so i showed him in the manual and he looked a bit silly , will test new stat and let you know how i get on

Yes you need a thermostat, sorry I only added to this because of the spam that came before it.

I had an experience a couple of weeks ago with a thermostat failing, as electrical equipment occasionally does. It stopped working and was no longer regulating the heat mat. When I caught it the temperature was 106F on the surface and still rising. My ratsnake was in this viv and I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't spotted it when I did.

Yes, thermostats are essential.

You make it sound as though thermostats stop anything bad happening but then make a post about how you were very lucky to save your snake from a supposed 'super hot heatmat' even though it has a stat on it?

This entire argument seems to hinge on those pictures of that heavy boid snake with the burns from an incorrectly applied heatmat - and that was WITH a stat lol. It appears stats aren't a solution to this fictional problem with heatmat temperatures.
