urm sorry to post this here, not sure if anyone can take this to PM's with me because i'm sooo noobie with reptile vivs but need to learn so i can get me a reptile next year. You know when you have a basking spotlamp, then say a ceramic bulb or another normal spotlamp higher up just to generally heat the viv to what you need, do you need two thermostats? I suppose with a ceramic one and a normal one you do, im not sure if a dimming stat your supposed to use with normal bulbs works on a ceramic one and i know you can't use on/off matstat kinda ones for normal bulbs, maybe ceramic ones since they dont flash on and off.
Also when your using thermostats, say i have my basking lamp plugged into it, do i put the probe of the thermostat on the rock the lizard is going to bask on, or very near it or what? Then ALSO, since you need to turn the lights off at night you use a timer, do you plug your thermostat into the timer? If so when your thermostat is turned off by the timer, wont it lose the temperatures you've entered for it to measure( say i told mine to start dimming/turning stuff off, at 30c, wont it have to re-set every time the timer cuts the power to it?) sorry for the long posts, i kinda can't find a " you've never kept a reptile before so here is how things in vivariums actually work" I have a few more questions but i guess i will leave it to another time or something. Really sorry for stealing this thread, i just think people will be annoyed if i keep making threads just for two or three questions all the time, maybe someone could take it to Pms with me? |

good informative post, shows the facts, and proves you do need a thermostat.

I'm quite new to reptiles, I've had a cornsnake for 2 years in an old 3x2 fishtank that I converted into a viv, with 4 tiered levels to provide maximum options for thermoregulation. He is my first love, truely.
I read this post and pretty much crapped myself because I don't have a stat. I have a thermometer that monitors what i believe is the warmest part of the tank (right above the matt) and I never let it exceed the maximum recommended temp. However, I work a 9-5, so I can't always be there to see the temp in the middle of the day. I feel so neglectful after reading this post. I'm going out to buy a stat today. I hope Doug (the snake) forgives me! Thanks Reptile Forums UK
