But why would you when quite clearly unless it was designed for that purpose it does not or rather is not made to take the extra load.

That aside if the stat fails you are down TWO mats in two viv's, be that too hot or too cold it simply isn't good enough.

I guess some people can be pedantic about anything when they try real hard.

Unless you're measuring the temperature right on the floor *right above* the heat mat... you don't *know* what the temperature actually is.

Agreed. They are so expensive! Totally worth it, don't get me wrong, but expensive! I wish it was only £15. Mine cost me £35 each, and thats with a discount since I used to work in the store.
Should point out that with my discount I could buy a new 4ft viv exotic for only £60.

Why use a heat mat ever??
If you dont use those horrible things you dont need a stat

Example
Find a terracotta tile
Make a frame to fit underneath it with ventilation holes
Place a small globe under the tile
After one hour measure the temperature
Change light globe wattage to raise or lower temp
So long as there are no massive temperature swings in the room that temperature will not change and cannot change

You then have a perfectly safe virtually indestructible heat source with only one chance of failure or problems

Stats heat pads and heat cords are just far too much potential trouble unless you have to vary temperatures constantly
