Talking Hoggie!

So it's my bday tomorrow & im hopefully getting a hognose!! im sooooo xcited.
i'm told he's about 4mnths old so shall i keep him in a small faunarium like i did for the corns?? just until he's a bit bigger & can go in a viv.
Also i hear aspen is the best substrate so he can dig but shall i put in a tub of sand too & branches so he has stuff to do?
cant wait!!!
just need some advice & pics of you hoggy vivs so i can see how yours are all kept! ive read so many caresheets im cross eyed lol!!

I wouldn't put sand in because I hear it can get behind their scales. Branches for a hog? Not a clue I havn't kept them before but I guess its worth a try.

I have read that sand is highly NOT recommended as it can clog their cute little nose! I do keep mine on a bed of aspen, with plenty of hides (as the faunarium is too big for him - he is only 1 month and a half, I will add fake plants asap) and a feeding tray added when feeding (so that he doesn't swallow aspen). Don't know about the branches, but might add some as there is space. I love mine to bits already, he is ever so cute

We keep ours in a 9L RUB on a bed of wood shavings, about 2inches deep, with just a hide and a waterbowl and he's as happy as a pig in s**t!

Very basic, I know, but that's all he needs just now! Will give him something a little posher when he's fully grown, me thinks.

We tried putting him in a bigger viv but we never saw him! (see pic below)

hi all, im new to the 'herping' game and have been researching various animals to get an idea of where to start. recently my research has been based around the possibility of a western hognose as a first snake.

ive managed to get my head around most things but really struggle to understand the argument against sand as a substrate.

sure i understand why keeping beardies etc is a poor choice due to impaction (?) but if i was to keep a hoggie and feed outside of the viv that wouldnt be an issue, surely?

then i hear sand may irritate or clog etc but they live like this in the wild, why should it be more of an issue in captivity?
