Default Live feeding laws.

How does this affect feeding live foods?

That bill is now pretty much out of date as they have just brought new animal welfare acts in. But anyway, if you read the hundred odd other threads on the subject here, you will see that everyone interprets it differently, as they are never very clear!

I can't see that Live feeding can be anything but LEGAL. Though it is to be discouraged! I can't see myself ever having to do it.

Hi all,

If you have to live feed, some snakes will go back to FT, if your snake will not except fresh killed or frozen thawed.

You can cover yourself by getting a letter from your vet explaining the situation, and then you can feed at home not get the vet to do it for you..

It is not against the law to feed live, it's the RSPCA that will try to cause problems if it finds out.

There is a sticky about live feeding above.

I have read the sticky above but was hoping for some one to explain the 2000 amendment a bit more clearly.

Long short of it:

Don't do it unless you have to do it as the snake will not eat any defrost rodent or fresh killed.

They'd like a vet to oversee this but that costs and arm and a leg.

What you do in your own private home is nobody elses businesses so keep yourself to yourself, if you need to do it, then do it but don't do it for fun and post it to the world.

The RSPCA hotline seem to think it is against the law and no vet would support feeding live prey??

The RSPCA don't even like the keeping of reptiles.

End of the day, if you have a snake that will eat nothing but live and you will not or can not feed live then that snake starves to death because of human action or lack of, so that's cruelty, how do they justify that?

I'm not looking to justify live feeding I'm trying to find out the law.

And the RSPCA may have an opinion but need to observe the law and relay relevant information if requested.

As above, the RSPCA will try and stop you, but it is not illegal as long as its done for the animal and not for fun/entertainment.
