I would think it may be a little 'sharp' (just thinking about paper cuts)
not something I would use (except for the meecies) but some one else may think differently.

I tried that once. I was not gonna tell anyone, but since I came across this thread, I'll now admit to trying that
I didn't like very much, because when I tried with newspaper, it looked dirty and unpleasant. I tried with A4 paper, and the results weren't great either. I had to press firmily against the base of the viv, otherwise it wasn't looking really nice. At the end I got rid of it, and I'm using only turf or newspaper as substrate.

i have used shredded paper in the past but prefer sheets of newspaper as easier to clean
aspen is too dusty for my liking... |

I use newspaper at the bottom and lots of long sheets of kitchen towel folded up on top of that for my royal and boa. (I don't like the look of just newspaper).
Boa likes to hide underneath the kitchen towel like she's tucked in a duvet. I use hemp for my hoggie though as they like to burrow. |
