Default Indigos

Argh

There is very little useful info on the beautiful indigo snake online.

Been seriously considering a breeding pair but really need to be positive of its care and space requirements because ive had some conflicting information. Cant even find a caresheet on this site, which i was suprised about.

Any ideas?

Most who i know keep them like corns sometimes a bit cooler, nice big vivs and not too fussy over accessories in the vivs because they're messy blighters who somehow manage to even get poo on the ceiling which is an achievement in itself lol.

I dont know much, but they do need ALOT of space as in alot more than you'd normally give a snake for its size as they aer as active as anything. Also they're quite feisty as snakes go. I've never kept em myself tho so maybe ask around for someone who has?

Yes i have done, 6 foot viv apparently. But its nice to have more than one source of information that matches so you know its close to the truth!

Ive not heard anything about them being feisty though, far from it in fact so thats a new one on me.

TEMPS 80-83f hotspot rest of viv at room temp is fine.

VIV SIZE (min) 5x2x2 with things to climb on preferred for adults.

FEEDING smaller than usual food items, as they dont have as much "stretch" to their jaws as most other colubrids...my adults that range from 5.5-6.5ft all have 2 small rats per sitting, and feed every 7-10 days.

LIGHTING a low output UV light is recommended although from what i have heard from other keepers is not essential.

HUMDITY low to moderate...increase this when shedding as can be prone to bad sheds.

this is just my own observations from mine...and a VERY brief overview...they are great snakes to keep, and very active...usualy are very good to handle, the only slight things against them is the need for lots of space and also a pretty high food intake....but if you can meet these needs then they are very rewarding!
hope this is of some use

I know what you mean. I would like to have a big fat book on every species i keep going into physiology, reproductive biology, husbandry, wild habits etc etc. Truth is the further you get from the more commonly kept species the less likely there will be such a book. Indigos though naturally occur in north America so there should be a fair bit of info about. Try google scholar and if you find something thats not free then it may be worth just paying for it as scientific journals wont publish crap. Just use whatever 'common' knowledge you have of north American colubrids as its all applicable, but still search for the spacifics. Look into temperature ranges from its natural ranges for temperature guidlines at cooling time and summer for example. Best of luck!
