Default Corn Snake Care

I've been thinking about getting a Corn for a little while now, since i gave up another hobby of mine (reef keeping). I have experience with reptiles, as I've owned a Bearded Dragon for seven years.

Housing - Does a 36" x 24" x 24" sound good for life?

Substrate - Aspen most likely, changed once a month (at least). How deep?

Heat - Heat mat (ceramic bulb better to use?) connected to a Habistat Temperature Controller, energy saving bulb with guard to light the vivarium. I believe the temperature in the viv should range from 20 - 30 C?

Feeding when young?

Feeding when mature?

Two hides, one at each end of the viv, fresh water daily, heat mat should cover a third of the floor of the viv. I believe Corns reach a maximum of 4 - 6ft, correct?

Just a few questions that i still need answered, anything else i need to know? Feel free to give me advice, and thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have pretty much everything coverd and I high doubt that they will grow to 6ft most in the region of 3-5 but it can happen. Hope you have fun with your corn and trust me I bet you'll get more.

Thank you, you replied very fast, I think I'll stick around.

Just a few more questions, what should the humidity be? Is there any supplements i need to use on food items? How do i know how big a prey item the snake can take? And, when feeding do you usually give them just one mouse?

Instead of aspen should i just use kitchen paper when young? And should i just keep the snake inside one of the plastic vivs inside its larger enclosure until it is older?

Thanks again.

Dont worrie about humidity for corns they need very little.
No supplements needed as mice give all they need.
The prey to feed the snake is 1.5x its widest part of body.
When feeding i give mine one mouse, but some people depending on size go up from 1 them to 2 of the same size then after that move up to next mouse.
And as a baby yesh use kitchen roll
Yeah use a plastic viv/fanarium or rub with heatmat and matstat and keep lager viv until its older.

Last thing if u didnt already no.. one hide at cold end one at hot end water bowel and somthing to climb on if you wish as babies toilet roll holders do well as hides to
Cheap ways
Hope this helped

Oh yeah,,

Welcom to the forum

Thank you for the welcome and advice. So humidity is no concern? I'd like to monitor it anyway, just to be sure. Do you know what range it should be in?

Also, does the tank need to be cooler at night?

I'll be sure to do that.

only time you need to up the humidity slightly is when they're going to shed, don't think it's essential, but it helps, otherwise just having the water over at the warm end is sufficient, I can't remember reading ideals of humidity for corns as it's not really an issue for them. you don't need a night time dip in temp for corns from what I've read, they just move from warm end to cool end as and when they require it.

think you have everything covered, i'm just about to move my corn into a 3foot x 1.5foot viv. but like has been said, don't use that big when you first get it (unless you're getting an adult). i put my young corn in a 18inch x 12inch and she went off her food.

Ermm i dont bother to cool it at night mate Mesure temps with a DIGITAL Thermomotor as the stats arnt always acurate and for the humidy Heres a quote from the link below which is a very good care sheet on corn snakes with a video of a snake feeding aswell

quote -> @
Corn Snakes do not require a specific humidity level, but may appreciate a light misting of their vivariums to aid them during the shedding process.
Ensure that you do not allow the humidity to reach too high a level as this may cause your Corn Snake to develop an R.I or Respiratory Infection."

my sept 08 corn is in a 12" x 12" viv and he's quite happy. Baby corns don't like too much space.
