For the size of vivarium you've got (I assume the 18" and 36" are length - what's height and depth?) I would suggest:

Milksnakes (anything but Hondurans or Black Milks, both of which get moderately large)
Kingsnakes (Cali, Mexican Black, any of the Pyros, Greyband or Variables)
Trinket Ratsnakes
Trans-Pecos ratsnakes
Any of the Sand Boas (Kenyan, Rough-Scaled, Saharan)
Any of the Rosy Boas
Western Hognose

What are you looking for in a snake? Something that's handleable? Something that's brightly coloured? Something that'll have a bit of "spirit" to it?

Depending on the vivs depth and height, I would have to say a Royal.

A big female Rosy might get up to four foot long at a push.

You'd be looking at the two to three foot range generally for most Rosies.

And Rosy boas are in my experience brilliant for handling - they're so smooth.

i also really like green tree pythons, but i've heard you are not meant to really handle them?
