Default a change in importation laws

I overheard this when in a reptile shop, apparently its a new rule DEFRA are trying to bring into action to stop importing exotic animals and make more people want to breed within the country. Why I do not know / did not hear.

At the moment it costs someone £10 per species to bring in. So bringing in 100 royal pythons would only cost £10, and bringing in 100 corns on top would make the cost £20.

They are trying to make it £48 per species and £2 per certificate (animal). So bringing in 100 royal pythons would be £248, and bringing in 100 corns on top would make the cost £496.

Not sure if anyone here will care about this information but I thought I would post it - I guess it means better sales for UK breeders?

Be interesting to see when DEFRA declare this. Know they put out amendment to their laws in 2006 saying they'd also do update in 2008 but it never came. So is a distinct possibility.

Will this not result in a lot of interbreeding with less imports making the genepools smaller, resulting in more of the undesired effects occuring with certain species???

i cant really see why this would stop any people bringing in animals though, ok maybe it could affect the wholesalers with their markups etc. But as for adding 2 quid onto each snake, or the 48 for the permit. Well i dont know what other people spend when they import, but that cash is peanuts in the long run.

But the price difference is a fair amount.... I'd assume that it would put a lot of people off importing them, which is the idea I suppose....

DEFRA Are always talking about new ways in which they can stop the import buisness but i very much doubt it will ever stick. The import buisness benefits them also and they are fully aware of the risks involved on banning or making things diffucult as things will just go underground.

The other thing to consider is people will just land there shipments in europe and collect them around the larger european shows.

Intresting information.
Not to sure DEFRA will go ahead with it. If they do its a huge increase in the price of export. Which will result in a lot of changes in shops, such as variety and prices.
If you hear anymore let me know please.

Personally I wont hear more I doubt, I just happened to overhear the breeder and shopkeeper talking out back while I was alone in the shop. If it will even go ahead is unsure, I heard him start saying 'Defra are trying to make the law into...'
