Default Venomous snake I.D.

Just got an email from a friend who recently moved to the USA, not sure which area (he's a bit bland on details). Anyway, in the email was a picture of a supposedly venomous snake with this caption:
This cotton mouth (poisonous snake) just been found and killed by the
patio.

Here's the picture:

Can anyone ID this snake at all? Is it as said a 'Cotton Mouth' what ever that is?

Cheers

no flaming or anything...but think a warning on the thread title might be helpful as alot of younger memebers use this and some that are more easily offended.

although it certianly is dead. looks abit like nerodia erythrogaster flavigaster

cheers

It doesn't look like any of these pictures of Agkistrodon piscivorus...

Google Image Search for Agkistrodon piscivorus.

It REALLY doesn't look like it has a pitviper head - it really looks more like a racer or a ratsnake, maybe a water snake?

ssthisto ...it seems to have the same markings ( the black stripes ) on the side of its mouth that Nerodia spp have.
