We have started a thread in Lizards which has had a lot of interest, so thought we'd pop a link in here in case its of any interest to Snake people too! They carry out a whole range of testing, and IBD is also on the list.

Hope its of some use!

A note to boidae owners, I've just looked over their price lists and they do IBD tests (from swabs, £20, from tissue samples or on post mortem, £44). Details here.

Does anybdy know what they test for if they can do a test foor IBD? I was under the impression that IBD was impossible to diagnose/confirm without necropsy.

I also thought postmortem was the only method of diagnosis. You would be best giving them a ring, they have always been more than willing to chat when we have been in touch, and have been very helpful.

IBD (Inclusion Body Disease) (E + Oesophageal Swab) £ 20.00

IBD Definitive £ 44.00
(Biopsy of Pancreas or on post mortem, Brain, Pancreas, Liver & Kidney)
It is done by Biopsy in either dead or living snakes, I saw a live Boa have a biopsy done at work through ultrasound to test for IBD. The snake would defo have to go to the Vets for the Biopsy and then this would be sent from your vets.

This place is actually based at Birch Heath Vets in Tarporley, they are a fantastic exotic vets

Thanks for that, it's something I'd been wondering as I've spoken to a few people who claimed that IBD can be tested for in living animals, and ben told by vets that it HAS to be tested for postmortem. Learn something new every day. Do they just take a pancreatic biopsy so from the living animal? What in particular do they test for in this biopsy, is it hormone/enzyme/immuno/altered pancreatic cells, do you know? Sorry for the nerdy questions!!

Hi,

Just spoke to the lab re IBD. They confirmed that live biopsies can be carried out by your vet, they will need either a liver or pancreas sample, it is also possible to test from a blood smear or salivia swab however this is only accurate in about 10% of cases where they can actually see inclusion bodies, so therefore it is best to get the biopsy done for a definitive answer as the inclusion bodies will always appear in the liver/pancreas.

hope this helps!
