Default Do you guys ever feel guilty?

I am wondering if you guys (other thn those heating the room i think thats better) that keep reptiles ever feel guilty about the energy consumption.

you hear all this rap about global warming, loosing the fossil fuels, need to save energy, sve the planet etc etc etc and here i am caring but still having heat mats and vivs with ceramics(all on stats of course, not risking anything!) plugged in and to be honest i do feel guilty about it.

i love reptiles and i always want to have them but i do feel guilty about the amount of electricity i use.
anyone else the same?

i said heating the room is better as assuming your room is large enough 1 or 101 reptiles wont take up more heating devices.

I am doing an essay on light pollution at the moment, and being an avid collector of national Geographics and as they are so write alot about it I am fully aware that I am wasting so much energy.

In the future we are thinking of putting solor panels on our roof as our reptile rooms are in the loft space. Hopefully this will make a difference.

We have also switched all out bulbs to low energy ones and so are waiting for the next meter reading and electric bill to see how much we have saved.

I do agree that although reptile keeping is amazing, there are the downsides with wastage.

There are other ways though of saving energy - stacking is one and obviously keeping everything in one room (thats if you can).

In my opinion aslong as I'm more strict with energy consumption in my other daily activities (i.e switch all lights off, convert to energy saving bulbs, don't watch TV, use the fire for warmth, etc) then it makes up for the energy spent on heating.
I think compared to the majority of people- people who keep reptiles are sometimes very conservative with energy around the house.(well the stereotypical repitle keeper at least, I'm sure there are a few out there who couldn't care less.)

Not for one second, I use a lot of energy in my house and pay handsomely for it.

I know the term 'environment' is a trendy buzz word these days used by teachers and the savetheworld prawn sandwich eating brigade but I have been taking care of my own environment for many years.

I dont waste as much energy as all the shops in every high street in the country that leave their lights on all night long with no-one there!!

At least mine serve a purpose.

Yeah I agree. Plus I dont actually own a tv and alot of stuff the average family has in their house, most of our electricity goes on the reptiles so as long as we can get that down then really we are just doing our bit like every other eco friendly person (bar the ones who live in mud huts).

i dont as the vivs are heating the garage, and then garage is used as a drying room clothes now drip dry within a day not three days so we dont need to use the tumbledryer as much, and a tuble dryer uses more then vivs do so i feel better about heating the vivs for the day then using the tumbledryer twice

you soon changed your tune

for me i see it as i do feel guilty yes, but i also breed alot of wc animals which reduces the risk of more being imported....such as last year i sold 32 baby mangrove snakes...that stoped 32+being brought and demanding even more....so while i am doing bad, i am also doing good....it evens it out

i just need to start breeding more snakes than i am wasting engergy so i can get into heaven.
