I recently bought soe ARDAP after reading it was really good. I've read that to use as a preventative people saturate a bit of newspaper with it and put the newspaper in the viv. Will this work to get rid of any mites that are already present or should I spray the viv as well.
If I do spray the viv, how long should I leave it before I can put the snake back in?
Thanks

Default prevention..

if the snake didnt actually come with mites, or get infected by a new snake to your collection that did, it sounds like it mainly comes from substrate... so... to prevent mites, would i better off just using newspaper all the time, and not bothering with aspen or bark etc..

oh and when it comes to moss, does just shoving it in the microwave for 5-10(?)mins on high kill any?? or should i put it in the freezer or what...

good to see this thread has become of use to people! IT really is horrible when u get mites. Something to remember though.. even though you cant see any mites it will still pay to continue the process for another week just to ensure they are all gone.

Hi,

When you guys talk about baking viv decor and substrate in the oven, what length of time and temps are we talking? And can you bake cork bark?

Thanks Kay.

Had quite a bad mite problem with my pair of royal pythons recently.

After trying many many things the best solution i found was to soak them and oil them every day (to drown living mites and suffocate any new ones - the snakes don't love it, but it does them no harm and solves the problem)
And to disinfect the viv reguarly and strip it down to the bare minimum of things (i just put a big plate in there as a hide and the water bowl.)
Did this for about 2 weeks and everything sorted itsself out.

Mites are really really horrid little buggers, so i hope this helps someone!!

Hi all,

I have a little problem with mites and not sure if they are the same ones. This may sound stupid but i've seen mites in the enclosure, on the branches, logs etc but have looked him over very very closley (both myself and my partner have) and not actually seen any on him. His behaviour/feeding habits etc have not changed in the slightest. These mites are small light brown thngs who seem to prefer coming out when the light has gone off. Im just wondering wether these are snake mites or something else so i can treat them properly.
Im just worried as he HATES water and think i may actually give him a heart attack if i try to bathe him!

Anyone any ideas??

Ta
