Mite Treatments

Frontline & Provent-A-Mite never fails for me.

I spray all enclosures with provent a mite once every 6 months and always do new enclosures a few hours before the new snake comes in.

New additions (not babies though) are wiped down with front line, not had mites in ooo about 2yrs?

Qarantine helps too but provent a mite is good stuff, shame its not widely available in the UK though

Just had mites for the first time...

And after a darn good cry (guilt!), I've followed the instructions on here and hopefully Doris, StB and Mojo will be a lot more comfy.

Has anyone tried vasalene?

i haven't had mites in years and now i do. i gotta see the new treatments or just use the old ones.

i haven't, i've used the olive oil and that works for the mites on the snake really well.

an extremely easy method is to put the snake in a bath of tepid water with a little bit of soap in it to break the surface tension of the water. We all know mites drown very easily and the loss of surface tension means they cannot hide under the snakes scales.

After about an hour you snake should be mite free... repeat three days later to make 100% sure. I put the water tub in the snakes vivarium to stop the water cooling too much for the snake.

Excellent article but can i just expand this bit
Ivermectin is so toxic to snake mites you do not need to inject it in to the reptile. Just add 2ml of Ivomec to 1 pint of water and bathe the reptile in it for several minutes. Dip the animals head under the water and rub around the chin and eyes to ensure the water is in contact with all the reptile. This will kill any mite on the reptile.
Ivermectin can upset reptile stomachs so it is best NOT to let the reptile drink the water with it in.
Next clean the cage out and destroy all wood by burning. Wash everything in the water and Ivermectin solution. The solution can even be used in a spray bottle to reach all areas of the cage.
Just do not get it in the drinking water.
Ivermectin, should not be used with geckos, tortoises or indigo snakes, which seem to be sensitive to it.

doesnt anyone use the vapona strip method!!,i had a ball python once infested with mites,and it got rid of them a treat
