Question IBD - inclusion body disease...worries?

Hi guys I am getting increasingly worried about my IJ carpet python over the past few days...

Just recently he has suffered a bout of mites, which I treated with Zoo med mite-off and very stringent cleaning that took about 2 weeks or so..he has since eaten once and struck at his food (large rat) digested well no probs there....

Since I've had him he has eaten well - except missed feed once due to the above mite situ, and he has shed perfect once.

Now recently..past few days I've noticed he is almost paused in movement looking upwards either leaning against the side of the viv or just straight up in the middle...I've read a bit about IBD and the symptons involved and since noticing these symptoms I have handled and he has been alert i.e. hissing and moving away etc...

Today I tried turing him over in his viv so see if he would correct himself...he did correct his front end but took 2 mins or so to correct his second half of body (his belly scales were facing up) he only correct his position when he wanted to move..?

I am very worried about him and others in my collection

I also have a royal python and he had the mites second and was worse I treated him with frontline from vets, he is now recovered and ate for the first time last weekend for 2 months and is absolutely normal in behaviour...

Any help/advice or anything at all would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you all in advance...

Just seems I cant have a month go by without some form of problem and I try to look after them all soo well

Here is a pic of him with belly up

Snakes do often just stare up pointlessly, if it were IBD he wouldn't be feeding and when he put his head up he'd fall over backwards at the neck and be looping as such, IBD shows in lack of motor skills so if he's controlling his head, can strike feed then i very much doubt you need to worry.

Hello there!

Sorry about your poor IJ. He looks in a bad way.

I'm by no means qualified to comment on his condition, but might there be a possibility that this could be a reaction to the Mite Off?

I hope it's something as simple as that and not IBD.

Hi,

It sounds to me like he may have contracted a bacterial infection via the mites. I lost two young dwarf retics to this, sadly. It was bacterial meningitis. I would get the snake to a reptile knowledgeable vet ASAP.

Assuming I am correct, all you can do at home right now is keep well on top of the mites. Ensure your hygiene is spot-on to try and minimise your Royal from being a victim too.

Best Wishes

Tara

have alook in his mouth is it pinkish or pure white mites suck lots of blood and theres a fair lot in a IJ.

iF he's not eaten for a while and he's had mites on and off for a while he's be weak and not his normal self.

I used mite off on some of mine as we have hundreds of disabled reptiles here but I find its pretty useless if you actually have mites I've trated a snake to find them back and alive and kicking the next day.

Chances are they are prob still hanging around ardap is a good one to use i find and yep we also have mites its come in on a non carring substrate it happens

I have heard this too - something about the fumes in the sprays and stuff. Best to get him to a vet to be sure he's OK - hope everything's alright.

Mite offs safe but rubbish totally right about fumes as most chemicals can cause issues but mite off is a product that causes a reaction in mites arther then a chemical fumes killing them.

I've used mite off on hundreds of snakes directly for many years as a precaution even on 2 gram disabled hatchligs without any probs.

snakes often go belly up to cool down.
if he can still grip things and has muscle tone is probably nothing.
turn him on his back see if he can turn himsefl the rightway up this is a great way to tell

How long have you had the snake?

Sure it's not a gravid female?
