i don't know about copper reaction, but have you tried bamboo?? you can get thick poeces or thinner ones and bind them together, looks a bit more natural and its rather strong

Not sue why but I wouldn't use copper. Plastic pipe might be an option if you get free plumbing supplies.
As mentioned bamboo works well, or get some branches from the garden
