Also my views on the actual topic of mats in vivs.
in my opinion mats have no business inside a vivarium, they are made for indirect thermal contact radiated heating so are often referred to as undertank heaters for a reason, i've seen many a problem with snakes when mats are in vivs even statted.
As for the use of a stat, reptiles need certain temperatures without a thermostat you cannot control those temperatures so you NEED a stat i once put a 6x11 mat under a 2ft WOODEN viv yes UNDER and without a stat just to see (nothing in the viv btw) and the floor hit 110 INSIDE the viv sooo....
I also never attach stat probes to the mats but just off so i can dial the temp in better as i often find if i want a mat at 92 if i stick the probe on mat, dial in at 92 it only hits 88ish so i place my probe then fiddle with the dial and callibrate it with a digital thermometer which i also calibrate every few months too.
