Yes..100% right...Heatmatts should never be inside the viv....and yes, check temps before any herp/animal is put inside...but then what would i know with all these overnight experts on here !

you can get away with covering the heatmat with something. but you're going to need a heat gun etc to make sure it's right. never use a raw heatmat for body heat, you must cover it.
thermostat's are a good idea. there a complete peace of mind.
